Avatar Portrait
Each portrait incorporates the avatar the person has chosen, the room they spent time in, a picture of themselves and quotes from logged dialogue. I am curious with the ways that people choose to express their virtual identity as each avatar reflects a distinct aspect of the individual’s personality and lifestyle.Bolz Magazine Feature London UK

ArtiPhycial Language is an installation featuring a mini network of five laptop computers, where users select avatars from a provided library of images, shapes, and signs. In cyberspace, avatars serve as personalized representations in virtual worlds, allowing users to express different aspects of their personality and lifestyle. Communication occurs through typed text appearing in balloons above avatars, with each balloon containing quotes from logged dialogues. The project explores how people express their virtual identity, aiming to bridge the physical and virtual realms while addressing contemporary communication and identity issues. The portraits incorporate chosen avatars, pictures of the individuals, and quotes, showcasing the interactive world of communication through graphic icons, symbols, and text. The result is a whole new realm for self-expression and social interaction with subtleties not seen in text only chat rooms.
This project was created for Vancouver's Artropolis Exhibition 2003 and is an early example of interactive chat rooms and the use of avatars.
